Darth Maul
Prequel Trilogy

Darth Maul

Sith Apprentice

The terrifying Sith apprentice of Darth Sidious. Darth Maul's dramatic arrival on Tatooine — landing his Infiltrator at the Ong Jemal rock formation — was filmed in the Tunisian desert in August 1997.

The Blade in the Silence

Darth Maul is a Sith Lord of terrifying precision — half tattooed Dathomirian, half remorseless weapon. His double-bladed lightsaber, his acrobatic combat style, and his near-total silence made him one of the most visually striking villains in cinema history. His purpose, as Darth Sidious's apprentice, was simple: find and destroy.

🛸 The Arrival at Tatooine

Darth Maul's deployment to Tatooine — sent to recover Queen Amidala and locate the Jedi — was filmed in August 1997 at the dramatic natural rock formation of Ong Jemal (Ong Jmal) near Chott el-Gharsa. The "Neck of the Camel" provided the perfect alien sentinel for the Sith's arrival.

 • Sith Infiltrator Landing: The flat terrain at the base of Ong Jemal served as Darth Maul's landing pad
 • Probe Droid Deployment: The surrounding plains were used for the scene of Maul releasing his probe droids
 • The Chase: Maul's pursuit of the Queen's party ends in a lightsaber duel that was partly choreographed against Tunisia's actual landscape

⚔️ The Duel of the Fates

The climactic duel between Qui-Gon Jinn, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Darth Maul is one of the most choreographed sequences in Star Wars history — and it begins in the desert dust that so closely mirrors Tunisia's own terrain.

The Double Blade
Maul's saberstaff was a revelation in the prequel era — a weapon that showed the Sith had evolved beyond single combat into something altogether more lethal.
A Death and a Legend
Seemingly killed by Obi-Wan in The Phantom Menace, Maul survived in canon lore — his hatred of Kenobi surviving even bisection to drive some of Star Wars' most compelling later stories.

"At last we will reveal ourselves to the Jedi. At last we will have revenge."
