C-3PO
Protocol Droid · Human-Cyborg Relations
Built by Anakin Skywalker in Mos Espa, C-3PO began his existence on Tatooine — and his very first steps were across the same Tunisian sand dunes filmed in La Grande Dune and the Eriguet Dunes.
Built by a Child, Beloved by a Galaxy
C-3PO — fluent in over six million forms of communication and perpetually anxious — is perhaps Star Wars' most unexpectedly human character. The golden droid was built by Anakin Skywalker in Mos Espa, assembled from scavenged parts in their slave quarters. From the moment of his creation, his existence has been tied to Tatooine.
🏜️ The Great Dune Trek
In the saga's opening sequence, C-3PO and R2-D2 crash-land on Tatooine and split up, with C-3PO wandering alone across the desert. That desert? The Gour Beni Mzab dunes near Nefta, Tunisia — filmed in March 1976, the very first location shoot of the entire Star Wars saga.
- The dunes of Gour Beni Mzab were the first Star Wars images ever captured on film, March 24-25, 1976
- Threepio's solitary walk across the endless sand was shot before almost any other scene in the saga
- The scale and desolation of the Tunisian Sahara gave the sequence its genuinely alien grandeur

"We're doomed! There'll be no escape for the Princess this time. We should just shut ourselves down... oh, who am I kidding?"
