Obi-Wan Kenobi

Jedi Master · The Hermit of Tatooine

Jedi Master and mentor to two Skywalkers. Obi-Wan spent 19 years in exile on Tatooine — his hermitage filmed at the historic Amghar Mosque on the shores of Djerba.

The Last Guardian

Obi-Wan Kenobi is the moral backbone of the Skywalker Saga. Jedi Master, mentor to Anakin, surrogate father to Luke — his life spans the entire fall and redemption of the Jedi Order. After Order 66, he retreated to Tatooine under the identity of "Old Ben Kenobi," watching over young Luke from the shadows of the Jundland Wastes for nearly two decades.

🏠 The Hermitage

Obi-Wan's desert home — a solitary, sun-bleached dwelling on the edge of the Jundland Wastes — was filmed at the 10th-century Amghar Mosque on the Mediterranean coast of Djerba. The choice of a real, ancient Ibadi mosque to represent a Jedi's place of quiet contemplation is one of cinema's most profound real-world confluences.

The 1977 Shot
A second unit filmed the mosque on April 4, 1976 — the final day of Tunisian production. A careful frame excluded the Mediterranean, leaving only desert and sky.
The Special Edition Replacement
In the 1997 Special Edition, Lucas replaced the real location with a CGI model — making the original Amghar footage a unique historical artifact of the film's authentic production.

🪨 The Jundland Wastes

The gorge where Obi-Wan first emerges to rescue Luke from the Tusken Raiders was filmed in Maguer Gorge (Sidi Bouhlel), known to fans as "Star Wars Canyon." It is here that the saga's most important mentor first stepped into frame — and into cinema legend.

  • "These aren't the droids you're looking for" — delivered while standing on Djerba
  • The Mos Eisley tavern scene was filmed in Ajim, where Obi-Wan meets Han Solo
  • His iconic line about the place being "a wretched hive of scum and villainy" was spoken within earshot of the real Tunisian village

"The Force will be with you. Always."
